A BIRD flu epidemic would kill 40,000 people in Australia, even if it were only a fraction of the severity of the outbreak that ravaged the world in 1919. Modelling on the effect of an epidemic of bird flu, conducted by the federal Government's economic adviser ABARE, shows the Australian economy would shrink by 6.8 per cent.
