Bird flu a 180-billion-euro-risk to EU economy

bird flu pandemic among humans could cost upwards of 180 billion euros in lost economic output in the European Union in the year that it strikes, according to a study for the European Commission.

The study, the first for the 25-country EU group, estimates that an avian influenza pandemic would reduce economic output by 1.6 percent because of a slump in overall hours worked as well as in travel and leisure activities.
