Bird flu drugs only for sick, carers

Bird flu medication will only be handed out to those already diagnosed and their immediate carers if the virus reaches Australia, after a government backflip.

The government had previously proposed giving essential workers access to antiviral medication.

However Health Minister Tony Abbott on Tuesday said only sick people and those in direct contact with infected patients will have access to antiviral stocks.

"The attempt to keep prophylaxis going for the up to one million people who would normally be deemed essential was simply not going to work," Mr Abbott told reporters.
