Bird flu pandemic would shrink Asia economies by up to 9%

A bird flu pandemic would shrink Asian economies by 6-9 percent as strict quarantine measures impacted on global trade and sickness and death caused productivity to plummet, the Australian government's economic adviser has predicted.

The economies of developing countries would be worst hit due to higher mortality rates from an outbreak of bird flu in humans, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) said.
