East Africa: Bird Flu: the Full Scale of the Threat
The East African (Nairobi)
April 18, 2006

Countries in the region of East Africa have formed task forces to control bird flu and to protect poultry industries but some claim that little has been done to protect tourism. There are concerns that the bird flu scare could hurt Africa's birding industry. The practice of using poultry litter as livestock feed and the illegal trade in birds could help to spread the H5N1 virus. Scares over the bird flu virus may prevent tourists from traveling to the region. Tourism is an important industry for East Africa.
