Hawaii as a major tourist destination and an entry point to the U.S. is ahead of many steps in preparing for the bird flu. Officials started an airport flu monitoring system. A large number of visitors enter the nation in Hawaii and many are from the Far east where a number of emerging diseases originate. The airport at Honolulu caused the state of Hawaii became the first to examine incoming passengars on a voluntary basis for bird flu or other flu viruses. There are also plans for limited quarantines.
