Contingency plan?

Urgent and free hospital treatment for people who test positive for bird flu. People asked to keep homes and areas where birds are kept clean. Chicken should be prepared properly and deaths of chickens should be reported. Intensive bird testing programme begins 24 February with door-to-door searches in Jakarta, to be followed by random tests in 32 provinces. All birds living within a half-mile (1km) radius of a confirmed bird flu case will be slaughtered.

Vaccine research?

Details not available.

Anti-virals stocks?

Indonesia had about 30,000 doses of Tamiflu available as of October. These will be distributed through 44 hospitals and, by prescription, through pharmacies.

Other information?

Indonesia opposes mass culling due to the costs involved and the huge number of people who keep a small number of chickens. A review of laws under which farms can deny access to the authorities is planned. Most of Indonesia's human bird flu cases have occurred in Jakarta.
