The current epidemic of highly pathogenic avian influenza is primarily a disease of birds, such as domestic poultry, waterfowl and pet birds. But the disease can also infect mammals, including humans, rats and mice, ferrets, pigs, cats and dogs.

So far, the potential for human infection has been widely reported, and almost 200 confirmed human cases have occurred following contact or suspected contact with diseased birds or poultry products.
