Poll shows fear of bird flu widespread

Many Americans question whether or not the government will do a good job of handling bird flu if the virus gets to the U.S. They want a strong response to H5N1 including quarantines. Many believe that in the next year birds will be infected with H5N1. One-third worry that a family member will get bird flu. Half thought that the virus will kill them if they become infected. The most worried include women, the elderly, minorities, the poor, and those with less edicuation. However the poll shows that only one in ten have prepared for a possible outbreak such as storing food and water, and making other arrangments for daily life. Approximately 60% expect that H5N1 will infect U.S. birds.
