Romania's fowl-culling stems spread of bird flu, U.S. govt says

Romania culled almost 1 million fowl in May, stemming outbreaks of lethal bird flu that caused demand for poultry meat to slump by as much as 80 percent, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.

The H5N1 avian influenza virus was actively circulating in four of Romania's counties on June 30, compared with 18 counties in May, the department's Foreign Agricultural Service in Sofia said in report published yesterday on the Internet.
